My Learning Room is so much more than just a tutoring company! The one on one service is fantastic and the best experience I've encountered across the many tutoring companies we have tried (and not made much progress with). We were concerned about our son's progress at school and wanted to give him some extra help to ensure he can achieve his potential and open a few doors. What Does A Level English Involve?

A Level English involves a range of activities and topics – from reading, analysing, and discussing literature from various eras, right through to studying language, grammar, and usage.

As a student of this course, you can also expect to explore the history of the English language and its development over time, in addition to assessing current affairs through written texts such as newspapers, magazines and websites.

Another key aspect of this course will be understanding how to write in different forms such as essays, reports, stories or poems, as well as delving into cultural contexts and theories. We have both A level English language tutors and A level English literature tutors available to support you.

What Is The Difference Between A Level English and GCSE Study?

A Level English is a more advanced qualification than GCSE English, requiring a greater understanding of literary texts, language, and theories. For example, you will be expected to have a solid grasp of the basics of literary analysis, including an awareness of narrative structure, genre conventions and characterisation.

You will also need to be able to explore the context in which a text was written, and understand the implications of this. Furthermore, you will need to be able to develop your own interpretations and critically evaluate other people’s opinions at a much more sophisticated level. The selection of texts studied at A Level English is more challenging than at GCSE English, and you will be expected to engage with a variety of contemporary and classic literature.
