History A Level Tutoring
If you want to understand the past and gain insight into our present, there’s no better way than studying A Level history.
This subject is an in-depth look at how civilisations have evolved over time, and it covers a range of topics from philosophy to political science, giving you the opportunity to really explore the history of the world.
Knowing how to handle the step up from GCSE can, however, be tricky for students. This is why many of them are now turning to online A Level history tutors to help them gain the skills and confidence they need to succeed in their studies.

What Does A Level History Include?
A Level history includes a variety of topics and disciplines, ranging from classical historical studies to in-depth analyses of political systems. It covers different eras of history, from the Ancient World to the modern day, in addition to exploring themes such as religion, literature and art.
There is also a focus on developing research skills, which students will then be able to use in order to source evidence and draw their own conclusions. As such, it requires a wide range of skills and knowledge to be successful.
To complete the full A Level, students need to complete three components:
- Component 1: Breadth study (this may cover topics including the Crusades, the British Empire, Spain and the Age of Discovery, Russia in the Age of Absolution and Enlightenment, the Tudors, Industrial Britain, Tsarist and Communist Russia, and the Making of A Superpower: USA).
- Component 2: Depth study (examples of topics may include Royal Authority and the Angevin Kings, War of the Roses, Reformation, Religious Conflict and the English Church, the English Revolution, the Birth of the USA, France in Revolution, America, Italy and Fascism, Nazi Germany, The Transformation of China, the Russian Revolution, The American Dream and the Cold War.
- Component 3: Historical investigation (personal study)
Students must also study:
- The history of more than one country
- A British history option for component 1 or 2
- A non-British history option for component 1 or 2
- Topics from a chronological range of at least 200 years
What Is The Difference Between A Level History and GCSE Study?
If you studied history at GCSE, the first thing you will notice is that A Level is a big step up.
Students need to have a firm understanding of the topics they are studying, and to develop independent research skills. They will also need to be able to make informed arguments about their findings. This requires them to read widely, analyse sources, synthesise evidence, and draw meaningful conclusions. A Level history also involves writing longer essays and participating in debates and presentations on the topics covered, which is why many students look for extra support from an A level history tutor. If you are currently working towards your GCSE exams, our GCSE history tutors are available to support you through your revision.
